deal is a 12 year deal worth $64M.

Without Luongo Canucks go from a Divisional contender to a team battling for their lives for a playoff spot. As a Flames fan, I hate this news.

you hate it now, yes.
but 7-8 years from now you might be loving how the nucks got a 38 goalie under contrack for 5.5. ( if he isn't the same goalie anymore that is )
Basically 12 years = too long

agreed. stupid deal. now you have luongo and the sedins locked up to long term contracts at big money. they have what close to 20 mill locked up in 3 guys. and if luongo gets hurt, your stuck with him.

I don't mind these crazy long contracts for franchise players but I think the one exception is goaltenders. I think there is too much risk, with injuries and consistency.

I am just hearing today that there are out clauses in the contract. Luongo can opt out of the contract at the end of the 5th year. That is the same time that the Sedin's contract runs out. Then again after 7 years, the Canucks have an option to trade him or put him on waivers I believe. There is more to it, I think, but essentially it sounds like it is unlikely Luongo will be there for the entire 12 years... It sounds like it was a way to get his cap hit down and still be able to pay him the money he wanted.

If that's the case, then it's a great deal.

If I can dig up more info on it I will elaborate more on the details. But one thing I am sure of, there are certain times throughout the contract where Luongo could be moved despite the NMC.
